Grab a Bible.
Before you open it, understand these three things:
1.The Bible is God’s revelation of Himself to mankind.
2.We must understand the Bible accurately so we can know God accurately.
3.The Bible is meant to be applied to our life. It is meant to change you.
Open the front cover of your Bible. Turn the pages until you get to a page that says “Contents” or something similar to it. This page will tell you all the different parts of your Bible.
Run your finger down the page until you come to the word “Psalms.” This is one of the parts of the Bible. It is a collection of 150 poems. Find the page number for the Psalms. Turn to this page. Now run your finger down the page or keep turning the page until you get to a bold number 1 next to the first psalm or poem. This is Psalm 1. Keep turning until you get all the way to Psalm 119. This is the Psalm we will begin to study today.
This first sentence of this psalm will be marked with a “1” meaning that it is verse 1 of this psalm. Read just verse 1.
Now grab a pen and paper and write down who and what this sentence is talking about. In this verse, it’s pretty obvious who and what is being talked about but write it down even though it seems simple.
(For “who” it is about, I wrote that this verse is talking about those whose way is blameless and who walk in the law of the Lord. For “what” it is about, I wrote that it says they will be blessed.)
Next, write down what you understand this to mean. For this verse, it is pretty obvious what it means so don’t try to make this complicated. There will be other verses that you will study that will take a lot more effort to understand. Let this one be easy!
(For this step I wrote that when a person follows God’s law they are blessed.)
Last, write down what you should do in light of this. Spend some time praying about this and thinking about how you can apply it to the day that you are in.
(I wrote that I should follow God’s law because I want to be blessed by Him. I thought about the day I had ahead of me and asked God to help me to obey Him in certain aspects of it.)
You now know how to study any part of the Bible you open to! You simply use these three steps with whichever part you read. Look at what’s in the verse, think about what the words mean, and apply it to your life. There is so much more to say and to learn because our God is great but this is a perfect place to start as you seek to know Him accurately so that you can show Him accurately.
